Cages for Chinchilla - Be Sure to Choose Metal Over Plastic

By: James Watchfield

When selecting a chinchilla cage there are a number of reasons you should opt for the large metal variety as opposed to plastic.

The Chew Factor

Plastic can literally disappear through the constant and instinctive chewing of your pet. There are a number of reasons this is objectionable. Eventually, with the cage disintegrating it will lose its ability to contain your pet. Secondly, it will turn the cage into an an eyesore making it less likely you would want to display it. Even if the cage suffers minimal damage, plastic will stain and over time will become more and more difficult to clean. In addition, it very well may become a liability from a health perspective for your chinchilla as well as any other pets you may own; or even for children. Sharp edges could be produced and/or choking hazards could result. Would you really want to run this risk with your expensive pets or even the health of your family?

Sanitation

Hearty metal chinchilla cages are markedly less difficult to sanitize. Waste is much less likely to adhere to metal than plastic. If improperly sterilized plastic provides an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria and other potential health exposures for pets and other family members. You will probably become reluctant to allow children near the family pet for fear of infection. At some point you may begin to wonder why you decided to have a pet in the first place.

Why Do We Need a Large Cage?

Finally, we need to discuss the size of the cage. Duplicating as best we can the chinchilla's natural surroundings is a key component to their health and happiness. Intuitively, chinchillas are very active creatures and, as such, their natural tendency is to run and climb. They must be given the opportunity to so in an environment that emulates that which they had become accustomed to in the wild. With this in mind a metal cage that has dimensions that can accommodate a chinchilla's natural urges is preferred. A collateral benefit to having a larger metal cage is that it can simplify the integration of additional creatures to the habitat; and is durable enough to withstand the new additions.
